She grew up in Fairport, New York, a Rochester suburb, with her adopted family.

Ralph Kerr Jr. and Gordon Kerr are her siblings.

Pegula was involved in cheerleading and the school band, where she played the bassoon. She and a roommate made plans to travel to Alaska to work at a fishing camp after following in her brothers’ footsteps and enrolling at Houghton College.

She met Terry Pegula, who was dining at the restaurant while looking for a waitressing job. Terry gave her a position at his natural gas firm in 1991, and they soon began dating; they married in 1993.
