Pooja made her debut film appearance as herself in Daddy alongside actor Anupam Kher. For her role in the film, she won a Filmfare Award for “Lux New Face of the Year” for “Best Female Debut”. She was 17 years old at the time.

She got her big break with the character of Pooja Dharamchand in Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin in 1991.

In 2021, Pooja was cast alongside actors Shahana Goswami and Plabita Borthakur in Netflix’s Bombay Begum.
